The escape pod is only for real emergencies. If you feel you have no choice then launching the escape pod may be an option. If you launch the escape pod the main ship will self destruct and the escape pod with you on board will be launched. The escape pod only has a small amount of energy and is slow. It's fitted with a weak laser and no other features.
